TMX Post Trade has announced the successful start of repo trading using standardised Government of Canada (GoC) General Collateral (GC) basket on the Canadian Collateral Management Service (CCMS) platform.
This milestone 鈥 the first phase of a multi-stage rollout 鈥 marks an important step towards improving collateral mobility in the Canadian repo market with full automation of repo collateral and unlimited real-time substitution.
According to the firm, the standardised GoC GC basket will support more efficient liquidity management and encourage broader adoption of CCMS, Canada鈥檚 first triparty service offered by TMX Group and Clearstream.
Collectively, the CCMS triparty platform and GC baskets will strengthen the resilience, efficiency, and overall functioning of Canada鈥檚 repo market.
Standardised general collateral baskets will be introduced in the coming months, including Provincial GC, Canada Mortgage Bonds GC, National Housing Association Mortgage-Backed Securities GC, Public Sector Entities GC, and Corporate GC baskets.
In an online statement, Steve Everett, chief commercial officer, CDS & Post Trade Innovations at TMX, said: 鈥淭his is much more than a product milestone. It is another foundational building block for the future of Canada鈥檚 secured funding market.
鈥淲hen we first envisioned what is now CCMS, the ambition was to create infrastructure that could evolve with the market 鈥 improving collateral mobility today while creating the foundations for what comes next.
鈥淭he launch of the standardised GoC GC basket takes us another step forward, creating important building blocks for GC pooling, greater market liquidity and, ultimately, the evolution of pooled repo clearing in Canada.鈥
