Beneficial owners must become more proactive and less reactive when it comes to their securities lending strategy, according to industry experts.

Multiple panellists at IMN's Beneficial Owners' International Securities Lending & Collateral Management Conference told an audience of beneficial owners that they must become more educated about their lending programme and be prepared to make quick, data-driven decisions on policy changes.

鈥淏eneficial owners are traditionally reactive and wait for their agent lenders to make changes, but going forward they need to take control and make suggestions for what to do themselves,鈥 explained Armeet Sandhu of Stonewain Systems.

Nancy Allen of DataLend added: 鈥淏eneficial owners need to become masters of their own destiny and make decisions on collateral type and terms they will accept. But they need the right data to do that.鈥

The entire panel of technology providers agreed that some beneficial owners are beginning to request market data directly, as opposed to only accepting their agent lenders' analyses, but more needed to take this step.
